Chennai, October 7, 2024 – The highly anticipated Indian Air Force (IAF) air show at Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach drew a massive crowd of approximately 15 lakh spectators on Sunday. However, what was meant to be a spectacular event turned tragic as five people died, and two others were hospitalized due to severe heatstroke. The sweltering heat and lack of adequate facilities overshadowed the event’s success, raising concerns about public safety during large gatherings.
The air show, organized to showcase India’s air power and the prowess of the IAF, attracted people from all walks of life. From early morning, crowds began pouring onto Marina Beach, with many traveling from various parts of the city and neighboring regions to witness the breathtaking aerial maneuvers. Buses and trains were packed, and traffic around the beach area became congested, leaving many spectators to walk long distances in the blistering sun.
Unfortunately, as the day progressed, the rising temperatures and lack of shade began to take a toll on attendees. Despite some individuals coming prepared with umbrellas and water, the extreme heat proved too much for many. By the end of the event, five people had lost their lives due to heat-related complications, and nearly 100 others required medical treatment.
Fatalities and Heat-Related Emergencies
Among the deceased was 34-year-old V. Karthikeyan, a resident of RMV Nagar in Thiruvottiyur. Karthikeyan fainted near the INS Adyar gate and was immediately rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), where he was declared dead upon arrival. Similarly, 56-year-old D. John from Korukkupet and a man named Srinivasan from Perungalathur fainted near the Parthasarathy arch on Kamarajar Salai. Both were taken to the Government Omandurar Multispeciality Hospital but tragically did not survive.
A fourth victim, identified as Dinesh Kumar, was found unresponsive on Marina Beach itself. His body has been sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The identity of the fifth victim, known only as Mani, has yet to be fully confirmed.
Medical professionals have indicated that the deaths were likely caused by heatstroke, exacerbated by pre-existing health conditions. RGGGH Dean Dr. E. Therani Rajan explained, “When the temperature rises, the hypothalamus can fail to function properly, leading to a systemic inflammatory response syndrome that affects vital organs. Some individuals may experience arrhythmia, which can result in cardiac arrest and death.”
Massive Crowds Strain Infrastructure
The air show’s immense popularity strained the city’s infrastructure, with public transportation systems overwhelmed by the sheer number of people. Trains and buses were overcrowded, and the area surrounding Marina Beach was gridlocked for several hours. The massive influx of spectators led to significant delays and inconveniences, with many people forced to walk long distances under the hot sun to reach the venue.
The heat and lack of shade contributed to a public health crisis. Ambulance services were stretched thin as emergency responders from the EMRI 108 network rushed to assist over 100 individuals who reported dizziness and other heat-related symptoms. Forty-five people were treated at the RGGGH, 43 at Omandurar Hospital, and seven at Government Royapettah Hospital. Most of the affected individuals were treated as outpatients and discharged after receiving care.

Questions Raised Over Event Management and Safety
The tragic outcome has sparked widespread criticism of the event’s organization, with many questioning the lack of proper planning for such a large-scale gathering. Despite warnings about the high temperatures, there were insufficient provisions for safe drinking water and shaded areas for spectators to escape the sun. Several attendees voiced their frustration, stating that the government did not adequately prepare to ensure public safety.
“I came with my family early in the morning, but there were no proper facilities in place. We had to walk a long way to the beach, and there was no drinking water available. Many people were suffering in the heat,” said one attendee.
Opposition leaders, including former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, criticized the ruling DMK government for failing to prepare adequately for the event. “This is a clear example of the government’s negligence. They should have anticipated the crowd size and made the necessary arrangements to protect people from the heat,” Palaniswami stated in a press release.
In response, Chennai Corporation officials have acknowledged the challenges posed by the large crowd and extreme weather conditions. A spokesperson for the Corporation confirmed that 14.5 tonnes of garbage were collected from Marina Beach following the event, highlighting the logistical difficulties of managing such a significant public gathering.
Heatstroke and Public Health Risks
Doctors have warned that heatstroke poses a serious risk during large outdoor events, particularly when temperatures are high and proper amenities are not available. Heatstroke occurs when the body’s temperature regulation fails, leading to symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, and, in severe cases, loss of consciousness or death. People with underlying health conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes, are particularly vulnerable.
Medical experts advise individuals attending outdoor events in hot weather to take precautions, including staying hydrated, seeking shade whenever possible, and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Authorities have also been urged to improve public safety measures at future events, particularly by providing adequate drinking water, medical facilities, and cooling stations.
