Mumbai, October 2024: In a landmark event aimed at transforming Mumbai’s urban mobility, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ₹14,120 crore BKC to Aarey Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road section of Mumbai Metro Line-3 on Saturday at an event in Thane. This key section, part of Mumbai’s ambitious metro expansion, promises to significantly ease commuting between Mumbai city and its suburban areas.
Flagging Off Metro Line-3
As part of his visit, PM Modi flagged off the BKC to Aarey JVLR metro service, which will cater to the transportation needs of western Mumbai. During the event, he also took a short ride in the metro between the BKC and Santacruz stations, symbolizing the government’s commitment to improving public transportation in the region.
The Mumbai Metro Line-3 is a critical piece of infrastructure aimed at enhancing connectivity in one of India’s busiest cities. Once fully operational, this metro line is projected to serve around 12 lakh passengers daily. It will help reduce congestion on Mumbai’s overcrowded roads and cut down travel time, bringing relief to daily commuters traveling between the city and its suburbs.
Foundation Stones for Mega Infrastructure Projects
In addition to the inauguration of Metro Line-3, Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stones for several major infrastructure projects worth over ₹32,800 crore. These projects are designed to further develop the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), focusing on transportation and urban development to meet the growing demands of the population.
One of the key projects initiated by PM Modi is the Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail Project, which will be constructed at a cost of ₹12,200 crore. This ambitious metro project, spanning 29 kilometers with 20 elevated stations and two underground stations, aims to enhance the connectivity of Thane, one of Maharashtra’s primary industrial and commercial hubs. The metro will help integrate various parts of Thane, making transportation more efficient and supporting the region’s rapid urban growth.
Another significant project launched is the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension, designed to provide seamless connectivity between South Mumbai and Thane. This extension, which will run from Chheda Nagar to Anand Nagar, Thane, will ease traffic bottlenecks and provide a faster, more efficient route for commuters traveling between the two regions.

NAINA and Thane Municipal Corporation Projects
In addition to metro and freeway projects, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) project. This ₹2,550 crore initiative will focus on building critical infrastructure, including arterial roads, flyovers, bridges, and underpasses to support the development of the new Navi Mumbai International Airport. The NAINA project is expected to enhance regional connectivity and play a crucial role in the expansion of the airport, which is poised to become a major hub for air travel in India.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for the new Thane Municipal Corporation building, a ₹700 crore project aimed at creating a modern administrative hub in Thane. The new building is expected to improve the efficiency of civic operations, benefiting the residents of Thane.
Boosting Urban Growth and Development
These projects, part of the government’s broader infrastructure push, are intended to address the growing transportation needs in Mumbai and its surrounding regions. Thane, in particular, has emerged as a key area for industrial and commercial growth in Maharashtra, and the new metro and freeway projects are expected to cater to the increased demand for better connectivity.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is also pushing forward with plans to construct seven new ring roads across Mumbai, which will allow residents to travel across the city in less than an hour. This initiative, combined with the new metro lines and freeway extensions, represents a game-changing development in Mumbai’s urban landscape.
Leaders Present at the Event
PM Modi’s visit to Maharashtra was marked by his prayers at the Jagdamba Mata temple in Poharadevi before proceeding to the Thane event. He was joined by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, all of whom played crucial roles in the planning and execution of these ambitious projects.
The presence of these key political figures highlights the importance of these infrastructure projects in Maharashtra’s development agenda. The projects initiated on Saturday are expected to accelerate economic growth, improve transportation, and enhance the quality of life for millions of residents in Mumbai and Thane.
With these significant infrastructure projects underway, the region is poised for rapid development, paving the way for a more connected, efficient, and sustainable urban future.
